My 2004 Guitar Center Drum-Off Store Finals Video

I did a preliminary search in the
hopes of finding some Dazzler samples
on it, which he'd posted before and
a number of times but came up empty.

Let me just say about Dazzler that
he is a drummer that loves jazz and
swing, emphasizing timekeeping and
and tasteful filling - all for the
music's sake. He's not about flash
or solo. He is about the music.

He has a light touch and in every-
thing I've heard (swing), he's been
spot-on. It's my understanding that
he gets a lot of gigs up in the UK
and I don't it's a wonder why.

I'm sure we'll turn something up,
with him on it. I'll keep looking.

He comes from a world, whose every
goal is appropriate playing. In jazz
and especially swing (big-band), this
is so, so essential.

He also drinks really good beer.

FlamTriplet also has some samples out
there and although radically different,
he tears it up in his genre.

The fact is that there are monsters
here on this forum. Alex, Steve, Tombo,
Pedro, Derek, Tom, Randy, Roy.... I'm
leaving a lot of guys out. They can kick
some major ass. I love listening to them
and enjoy reading whatever they post.

In the end, I truly believe that every-
one is trying to stir something pos-
itive here and that's why I hang here.

I'm going to read this thread fully when I get home. I will just say for now, these things ARE to show off chops, period. Who cares if they're not musical? It's not about how far it'll get you when playing with other musicians, it really is about 'how many balls you can juggle' and as derek said, it's about playing for the judges, thus playing to win. I dunno, I got sacked by my band a few months ago. Nothing to do with my playing, but to do with me and the bandleader falling out over various issues. I've not been playing much except a few deps, so I've not been on the pulse of things recently. It'll change though, I'm sure. [img]wink.gif[/img]

There are both pros & def cons to the whole superstore "whatever-off."

But i think Derek had the most logical reasoning.
Glean what you can from them [which after time will lessen ;c)], use them to your benefit if you can, & move on. Making music is more important anyways. It isnt a $$ gig, it's simply a drum-off. Nothing less, & def nothing more.

Ah fuse, I think I overstayed my welcome too. After 4 years I thought my position there was safe as houses and that I could call some shots. But I couldn't. I even started getting a bit argumentative with members. The thing that pissed me off most which kind of led to my downfall was something I think I mentioned on here a while ago about the bass player always being allowed to turn up whenever he feels like it. Plus a bunch of bullshit from the bandleader about extra money. Anyway, life goes on, and thank god I have some teaching. Regarding all the comments and friction in this thread.. well, first of all, there's always room for improvement, and a lot of the comments about the technical side of nevesis' are good. My only criticism is that some of the grooves were rushing, BUT, I would put that down to adrenaline, in the light of the competition. I've no doubt nevesis can play that shuffle a bit slower, but it's all there. But man, this guy is amazing. I particularly liked the grooves from about 2.17 to 3.14, they're cooking, certainly the slower groove at 2.43 is really nice. Chopswise, incredible. He did what he set out to do.

I disagree with all the shoutouts about "IT'S NOT MUSICAL!" purely and simply because IT'S A DRUMMING COMPETITION FOR GOODNESS SAKE! It's meant to be a chopsfest. Try and distinguish between a musical situation and a technical display, the same way we separate loving intercourse from people taking part in an all day sexathon! lol. [img]tongue.gif[/img]
